Characters gain experience points and level up after defeating enemies new abilities are learned by equipping items called magicite shards.
Battle systems include traditional turn-based combat or active time battle systems which require fast reactions from players. The player controls a cast of characters who travel across the world map, completing events and battling enemies to progress the story. The story follows a group of rebels who fight against an empire attempting to conquer the world. It was later re-released as part of the Final Fantasy 20th Anniversary campaign, where it was available on the PlayStation Network in Japan from October 2011 to April 2012, and outside Japan from June 2015 to December 2015. The game was released in Japan in December 2002, and in North America and Europe in February 2003. It is a port of the 1994 PlayStation game Final Fantasy 6, with some enhancements and modifications.
